From eighteen years worth of experience with the new music ensemble Orchestra 2001, Herbine has worked closely with many 20th and 21st Century composers such as Tan Dun, Gunther Schuller, George Rochberg, Peter Schickele and Andrea Clearfield.

Piccolo solos are now being written by Daniel Dorff, Cynthia Folio and Louis DeLise for Lois to premiere in 2011.

Lois' New Music Box article,"Escaping the Nutcracker Suite: Composing for the 21st Century's Piccolo Player" is available to read here. This includes guidelines for the composers' use of the piccolo in solo, chamber and orchestral writing. Composition students at of University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Leeds (England) and Berkeley are using for the article as a resource in their composition classes.
